Today in Labor History May 15, 1919: Workers in Winnipeg, Canada, initiated a huge general strike involving 30,000 workers. The strike lasted until June 26th, when the Winnipeg Labor Council declared the strike over. During the strike, the Mounted Police tried repeatedly to violently suppress the workers. The workers called for a six-hour workday and a five-day work week. During the strike, virtually the entire workforce halted work. Even the local cops voted for the strike. However, the strike committee asked the cops and utility workers to stay on the job to help keep basic services functioning. They set up a huge public kitchen which served food to hundreds of people each day. The Winnipeg “Free Press” called the strikers bohunks, aliens and anarchists. The called in the Royal Mounted Police and arrested dozens of people, charging some with seditious conspiracy. On Bloody Saturday, June 21, the Mounties fired into the crowd, killing one and wounding thirty others. In May and June, General Strikes broke out in 30 other Canadian cities.

The Yemeni Armed Forces, affiliated with the Ansarallah movement, launched a hypersonic ballistic missile targeting Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport on Wednesday.

“The missile successfully hit its target,” spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree announced, adding that it was “the third missile attack in less than 24 hours.”

In an earlier attack, targeting the airport, the Zulfiqar ballistic missile was used, the spokesman said.

Longer working hours have been linked to higher emissions, yet the climate movement seems reluctant to join the campaign for a four-day week—a potential strategic error given the social, health and climate benefits of working less.

Sower · Working less is the most underrated climate solutionFewer work hours can lower emissions. So why isn’t the climate movement fighting for our collective right to relax?

Today marked the conclusion of an historic strike vote for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

80% of AUPE's over 22,000 eligible Government of Alberta members cast their ballots and 90.1% voted YES, giving an incredible strike mandate to bring to the negotiating table. If the GoA does not bring a fair agreement that covers the cost of living for the workers, then AUPE is prepared to strike.

24,000 Government of Alberta employees could be poised to strike in the next 4 months if negotiations break down, which we hope they do not. They represent all aspects of provincial services, allowing our government to run.

The Alberta government attempted to divide members by accepting different contracts for different members, but AUPE members stand in solidarity with ALL the workers.

Today in Labor History May 10, 1887: UMW organizer Ginger Goodwin was born on this date. He was also a socialist and anti-war activist. In 1918, he was murdered by a private cop. His assassination, along with outrage over World War One conscription, inflation, low wages, and censorship of the socialist media, sparked Canada's first General Strike, in Vancouver. Goodwin said that workers of one country should not be employed to kill workers of another country because of capitalist conflict. “War is simply part of the process of Capitalism,” he said. “Big financial interests will reap the victory, no matter how the war ends.”

The Ballad Of Ginger Goodwin

Ginger Goodwin is a name you don't often hear or see.
They don't say a word about him in our country's history.
He was a labour leader and he wouldn't go to war.
"While the army breaks our strikes at home, its strikers I'll fight for."

In Trail back in the summer of 1917.
Ginger fought against conscription even though he was class D.
But when he led a miners' strike to spread the eight hour day
Conscription checked him out again and found he was class A.

Ginger hid from cops and soldiers in the hills near Cumberland.
Miners brought him food and sheltered him, they knew he was their friend.
So the bosses hired special cops when their power was at stake.
Dan Campbell murdered Goodwin at the head of Comox Lake.

The whole damn town of Cumberland turned out for the funeral hike.
Vancouver's workers shut her down for a one day general strike.
Soldiers back from foreign wars then attacked the labour hall.
Both the bosses and the workers knew who caused the Czar's downfall.

You can still see Ginger's grave along the road to Cumberland.
He didn't win no medals and no one understands.
Don't tell me that a hero has to die in foreign lands.
We lost heroes here in labour's wars and they all had dirty hands.

Today in Labor History May 9, 1934: Longshoremen began a strike for a union hiring hall and union recognition, ultimately leading to the San Francisco general strike. After World War One, West Coast longshore workers were poorly organized or represented by company unions. The IWW had tried to organize them and had some successes, like in San Pedro, in 1922, but they were ultimately crushed by injunctions, imprisonment, deportation and vigilante violence. While longshoremen lacked a well-organized union, they retained a syndicalist sentiment and militancy. Many Wobblies were still working the docks. On May 9, 1934, longshoremen walked off the job at ports up and down the West Coast, soon to be followed by sailors. Goons shot at strikers in San Pedro. There was also violence in Oakland and San Francisco. Street battles between the cops and strikers continued in San Francisco, heating up on July 3. Things came to a head on Bloody Thursday, July 5, when police shot 3 workers (two of them died). The attack led to a four-day general strike that effectively shut down commerce in San Francisco, despite police violence and attempts to weaken it by national unions. In 2017, San Francisco renamed the big plaza across from the Ferry Building Harry Bridges Plaza. Many of the city’s recent Palestinian solidarity protests have taken place there.
