Book review: I finished reading Notes To John by Joan Didion, a series of summary notes she wrote about her therapy sessions with a focus on her relationship with her adopted daughter. Its coverage of adoption, personality disorders, depression, and substance use hit close to home for me. I would not recommend it to anyone who feels fragile around those topics. But, I did gain some insights by eavesdropping on Joan’s therapy sessions. Yes, some have raised the question of whether it was unethical to publish her notes. But at least one reviewer argued the way she left the notes suggested that she expected them to be read after her death.

Found an exposed database with almost 2 million of really sensitive records from an Adoption Center in the US.

The company quickly fixed the exposure after I contacted them but never bothered to reply back to any of my emails.

Nous avons recueilli cette petite chatte temporairement, elle n'est malheureusement pas pucée et personne ne l'a réclamée malgré nos annonces...
Elle a le poil angora blanc et les yeux bleus, elle est hyper câline et posée, et aime jouer avec les humains. Elle est très sociale et pas farouche. Elle est propre et gère bien sa litière.

Elle n'est pas stérilisée donc c'est à prévoir, de même qu'une visite pour les vaccins.

Elle peut rester encore quelques jours à la maison mais on ne pourra pas la garder, on préférerait la faire adopter dans nos réseaux mais sinon nous devrons la déposer au refuge.

Nous avons déjà deux chats et ne pouvons pas la garder.

Nous sommes sur Hellemmes à côté de Lille, mais je peux me déplacer dans un rayon de 100km autour si besoin.

Our (adopted) son has made it so evident how little importance nature has compared to nurture. He has been with us just over six months but already has a lot of mannerisms that I had, as a baby. Not even thongs I am (consciously) doing now. I am sure a lot of thing are just common to all babies, but his facial expressions are so similar to photos of me as a baby. #adoption #natureVsNurture

Die soziale Übertragung erworbener #Futtertechniken wird selten außerhalb eines Wirbeltierkontexts betrachtet. Hier zeigen wir jedoch, dass #Nektarrauben durch #Hummeln (#Bombusterrestris) - ein #wirbelloses Verhalten von erheblicher ökologischer Bedeutung - das Potenzial hat, sich mit den für die #sozialen Übertragung typischen beschleunigten Bevölkerungsraten zu verbreiten. Wir fanden heraus, dass die Erfahrung der Nahrungssuche aus geraubten Blumen die Entwicklung des primären Raubs bei zuvor legitimen Jägern erheblich förderte, was bedeutet, dass der Erwerb von #Nektarrauben durch eine Person seine #Adoption in anderen erleichtern wird. Unsere Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass die positiven Rückkopplungseffekte der sozialen Übertragung möglicherweise eine ökologisch wichtige Rolle im Zusammenhang zwischen #Pflanzen und #Bestäubern spielen könnten.

we who live in “receiving countries” for intercountry adoption embrace the saviorist belief that #adoption rescues orphans. I am leading a book-group discussion of THE KITE RUNNER, a novel whose second half narrates the protagonist’s effort to overcome bureaucratic red tape and bring an orphan out of Afghanistan for adoption into his family in the US, the world’s largest receiving country. In fact, orphanhood is often a lie. Some intercountry adoptees call themselves “paper orphans.”

The commission identified many cases where the identities and family information of children were "lost, falsified or fabricated" and where children were sent abroad without legal consent. It cited the case of a baby girl it identified only by her last name, Chang, who was born in Seoul in 1974. Her adoption agency in Seoul knew her mother's identity. But in the documents it sent to her adoptive family in Denmark, the agency said the girl came from an orphanage.

it’s not without reason that one of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, who fought for the return of their grandchildren stolen by the Argentine junta and handed out as gifts to adopters during the “dirty war,” called intercountry #adoption an “abomination.”

and of course the United States of America, the country that invented the #adoption industry and perfected the legal framework for trafficking babies into the eager arms of adopters, will conduct no serious investigation into these human-rights crimes.

Nor would it under a “progressive” government.

The findings carry repercussions beyond South Korea, as several receiving countries - including Norway and Denmark - have opened investigations into their international adoptions. The United States, which has received more children from South Korea than any other country, has not done so.

what was true to a horrifically extreme degree in postwar Korea is true of adoption generally: it is a privatized alternative to the provision of social welfare for vulnerable and resourceless pregnant people.

#adoption is a way that society turns its back on these people.

In its destitute postwar decades, South Korea promoted overseas adoptions to find homes for orphaned, abandoned or disabled children abroad rather than build a welfare system for them at home. The government left it to the adoption agencies to find and ship children abroad for fees from adoptive families.
