I know we all love to criticize older generations, but in the 20th century if someone did a Nazi salute you could almost guarantee that a WW2 veteran would punch them in the head, and I think there was a great societal benefit to that.

Sorry, but no. I grew up with a nazi vet next door, who left a leg an a piece of his skull in russia but not his belief in aryan supramacy and all that nazi stuff and there was no one in the neigbourhood who'd punch him but lot's of people who agreed.
